Engineering Connections
For this educational science series Machine Shop supplied special effects on two occasions.
The first part of the show aimed to demonstrate the terrific forces required to fill the support structures of tall modern structures with liquid concrete. This was achieved by firing projectiles of solid concrete out of the Machine Shop nitrogen cannon and measuring the pressure/distance relationship.
In the second part of the job the production team, led by presenter Richard Hammond, filmed our hydraulic ram (bottom picture) inside our workshop. The aim of this part of the show was to test out different structural designs under the awesome weight of the ram, to see which structure was strongest as an analogy for modern engineering.
